I’m looking forward to joining Sheffield’s new professional orchestra, The Brigantes, for a performance of Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto on October 15th.
The Finzi is my favourite clarinet concerto and it’s rapidly gaining a reputation as a classic of British Music. Written in the aftermath of the second World War, the work expresses sadness and anger but this is resolved by the delightful, tuneful music of the final movement. Finzi really understood how to write well for the clarinet and to allow the instrument to reveal its soul.
